Daylesford

Recharge your mind, body and spirit amid the period charm and peaceful bushland of Victoria’s Spa country.

Just 90 minutes out of Melbourne, in the heart of the Macedon Ranges, is the shire of Daylesford. First settled by Swiss and Italian miners in the 19th century, the area has maintained many of its original buildings, and made the most of the mineral springs that attracted those early settlers.

The towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are home to many health centres providing a wide range of therapies and health-related activities. For massage there are many places to go, like the Barshu Centre that offers various forms including Reiki and Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, or some masseurs will come to you like Abandon Stress Mobile Massage and Therapies, which also provides a number of other services such as Tibetan Mantra healing, aromatherapy, Tarot readings and many others. But of course, one of the big attractions of Spa country is the day spas. Just across from the Mineral Springs Reserve, there’s Body Isle Day Spa with a full range of services – mineral water spa baths being a natural – and in-house accommodation.

But while refreshing body and soul, don’t forget to take in some culture at the many art galleries in the region. The Pantechnicon is an example of creative use of space, almost as much a work of art as the works it showcases. Originally a livestock auction shed built in 1864, it was completely refurbished as a large gallery to promote the considerable talent of local artists. Similarly, The Convent Gallery is a renovated 19th century mansion. As well as seven exhibition areas featuring a wide array of art from national and international artists, the Convent also has its own bar, café, a Mediterranean restaurant, and a luxurious penthouse suite tucked away on the second floor. From the suite’s private balcony you can enjoy splendid views of the town and the mansion’s six acre gardens.
