Byron Bay

At Australia’s easternmost tip Robert Jenkins kicks back in a place of sun, surf, relaxation and festivals – Byron Bay.

Byron Bay is well established as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. And with a pleasant climate, beautiful beaches and gorgeous hinterland, it’s little wonder. The whole region has a relaxed atmosphere and even a brief visit is sure to leave you feeling completely refreshed.

A great place to take in the natural beauty and splendour of the area is at Scarabelloti's Lookout on Coolamon Scenic Drive. It affords an incredible view in all directions, taking in Byron Lighthouse, Mt Warning and the rolling hills of the hinterland. Nearby you can enjoy a picnic at Rocky Creek Dam, or there’s an easy hike in the Nightcap National Park through a secluded rainforest valley to the base of the Minyon Falls.

Another great way to see the coast is in a hot air balloon. Byron Bay Ballooning offers rides and weekend getaway packages. And ballooning is just one of the many airborne activities you can enjoy – soar above the beaches in a glider or drop towards them as you skydive. Or, if you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground there’s hiking, camping, horse riding and, of course, lounging the time away on the pristine beaches. As you’re near such a wonderful part of the ocean, why not enjoy some time on the water? Again, there are plenty of options, from sailing and kayaking to scuba diving and snorkelling – or you could always learn to surf. And there’s the chance to see dolphins, or go whale watching during the annual migrations.

In Byron Bay, relaxation isn’t just an activity – or lack thereof – it’s a way of life, and there’s ample opportunity to take it to another level and indulge yourself in a little pampering. Just three minutes out of the township you’ll find the Byron Bay Health Retreat where you can enjoy a day of massage and beauty therapies in a tranquil natural setting. For a more complete mind/body rejuvenation go to the Buddha Gardens day spa – a Balinese sanctuary where the staff design a personal treatment for you consisting of massage, traditional Ayurvedic therapies, frangipani body polishes and other health treatments, and you can meditate by the peaceful water features. You can even try Yogalates, a fusion of Yoga and Pilates.
