Fremantle
There’s music on the streets and a sense of fun in the old port city known as Freo.
They say you can find everything in this vibrant city, from a 100-year-old chandlery to new-age sellers of essential oils, and around every corner you’ll discover one of the specialist shops that are the treasures of Freo. It’s alive seven days a week and you’ll never be out of earshot of live music from the beat of African rhythms to rollicking piano accordions, funky jazz bands and up-and-coming rock stars.
It’s a place people come for fun and relaxation in cafes and restaurants, or for a browse through the markets, but it also has a proud history and distinctive well-preserved architecture. And of course there’s the sailing along the coast because, after all, this is the city that hosted the fabled America’s Cup competition of 1987 when Australia lost the ‘Auld Mug’. But while it’s proud of the past, it’s a city that lives in the moment and basks in the sunshine.
Fremantle Markets are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street. Entry is free and you can buy everything from ocean-fresh seafood to fruit and vegetables, health food, pottery and hand-crafted jewellery.
Popular places to visit include the stunning Western Australian Maritime Museum which is superbly located on the harbour, the Shipwrecks Museum, the Fremantle Arts Centre, the historical gold rush buildings and the old Fremantle Prison. You can find out about the history of Fremantle and the surrounding area at the Fremantle History Museum, and more maritime history can be found in the harbour, where you may be lucky enough to see a replica of the Dyfken which voyaged to Australia in 1606. The Historic Boats Museum also has a selection of boats you can wander around. The Old Customs House, Samson House and St John’s Anglican Church are all worthy of a visit.
