Ballarat

Victoria’s largest inland city has a special spot in the hearts of all Australians.

Ballarat was once a thriving mining town located on the world’s largest deposit of alluvial gold. These days it’s a cosmopolitan city of 88,000 people that boasts leafy boulevards lined with heritage buildings, and home to world-class attractions. Yet to most of us it’s synonymous with one of the most significant events in the country’s history – the Eureka Stockade.

Just 75 minutes from Melbourne by car, you can also travel there by train in about the same time and start your adventure from the impressive heritage station.
Almost every aspect of Ballarat’s rich history is covered by a walking trail or driving tour. The Eureka Trail follows the footsteps of the government troops sent to break up the Eureka Stockade. The fascinating Koori Heritage Trail is a journey through local Aboriginal history; and the Chinese Heritage Trail gives an appreciation of the part the Chinese played in establishing the city’s unique character. A number of other walking, cycling and driving tours also help to bring the city’s history to life. The Goldfields Touring Route provides a history-packed drive, while the Great Grape Touring Route is a self-guided tour of the lush wine regions of Ballarat, Pyrenees and the Grampians.
