And the Oscar goes to...Home Theatres continued...
Setting out
There are plenty of alternatives for those interested in just the occasional Saturday night at the movies and are looking for a simple and relatively inexpensive option. Most large retailers sell packages from well-known manufacturers that give good results with little fuss. Even easier are of widescreen LCD TVs such as Grundig’s Vision series with its Magic Fidelity audio system.
Setting the scene
A home theatre can be set up anywhere that’s convenient, from a corner of the living area with a plasma screen at one end to a purpose-built space complete with soundproofing, hi-tech components and authentic fittings. But to get the optimum experience choose a rectangular room and place the screen on one of the short walls with the sofa or armchair facing it but a comfortable distance away.
Because audio quality is all-important, consider soundproofing or acoustic panels on the walls and ceiling to reduce reverberation and improve clarity – and keep things sweet with the neighbours when your favourite music video is blasting through six speakers. On the other side of the wall, when you’re on the edge of your seat as the handsome hero whispers his undying love, you don’t want his tender words erased by traffic noise or slamming doors. Soft surfaces also absorb noise, so carpet the floors and cover windows with thick curtains – upholstered armchairs and plenty of cushions help too.
