Taking care of business

Whether it’s a dedicated room set up with hi-tech equipment or a converted cupboard in the family room, every home needs an area for paperwork.

Some households simply need a handy space that’s easily supervised where youngsters do their homework and parents look after the day-to-day affairs of the home. For them, a bench along a wall in the living room may be all that’s required. Set up with a computer and printer, some lockable drawers and bookshelves, this can be a cheerful space that the whole family shares. Add a message board, calendar and telephone and it’s likely to become the hub of the home. If it’s more for adult use, but doesn’t warrant a separate room, an impressive desk and chair will probably fit nicely in the lounge or even the dining room if it’s on the spacious side. The bedroom is also a popular choice when a little peace and quiet is needed to tackle bookwork and correspondence, in which case go for a lighter look with a neat desk or perhaps a console table that complements the other furnishings – and keep the desk accessories simple.

Serious business

If you’re fortunate enough to work from home – and 2.5 million Australians are – setting up an efficient work space will probably be the first challenge. Careful planning is the key, but take advantage of the fact that you’re in charge. You decide the hours you work – and how your office looks. A professional set-up puts you in the right frame of mind to get down to work, but this doesn’t mean creating a replica of the workplace you escaped. Express your individuality with artwork and personal touches.

Colour affects the mood of a room, so banish anything dreary in favour of stimulating shades that improve motivation and enhance creativity. A light neutral background works well, then add excitement with bright accessories – red for energy and confidence, orange for creativity and concentration, and green to induce harmony and balance. If things are likely to get a little heated or stressful, try painting one wall a soft blue for a calming effect.
