Stunning Gold
Our colour expert, Samantha Bacon, looks at the characteristics of this popular colour and explains the best combinations of paint, wallpaper and fabric to get the most out of decorating schemes.
Opulent and radiant, gold has been associated with wealth and power throughout history and is the leading symbol of status and riches. At other times – like in the warm golden yellow rays of sunshine – it is uplifting and stimulating. And paired with black and dark greys, it can be sophisticated and elegant.
Gold has fallen out of favour recently due to the popularity of silver and chrome finishes, particularly for door and bathroom hardware. However, thanks to its suitability as a colour for walls and soft furnishings, it’s re-emerging as a favourite. Fashion trends for 2007 and 2008 predict that we’ll be wearing a lot more yellow and as interiors follow closely behind, yellows and golds are set to take over homeware and decorating shops.
Gilt-edged mirrors and artworks are classics, but the same finish can also bring exotic overtones to more modern settings. As golden yellow is close to red on the colour wheel, glimmers of gold really enhance the warm tones of this hue. Golden yellow’s complement is purple – a timeless combination that also brings out the red in the colour to warm up the palette. Conversely, introducing silver tones brings out the blue in the purple and cools the scheme down considerably.
