Q&A with Lia Pielli Designer & Production Manager, Designer Rugs
What's in this season?
A lot more colour and pattern are prevalent this season and so too are strong graphic floral motifs. We’re now using combination yarns like New Zealand wool and silk, and colour palettes are becoming bolder. Where the base was once a neutral colour, it is now becoming the highlight among stronger tones. The rug is once again a feature rather than just complementing the space.
What size rug should I buy for a particular room?
The best way to work out the size you require in a room is to map it out on the floor: newspaper, masking tape, whatever is handy, and place it on the floor and see how it looks.
Rugs often define a space, especially in open-plan living areas, so choose one in an ample size to give a sense of space, rather than just framing the coffee table.
Care tips?
Vacuum regularly, and clean up spills immediately, the longer you leave them the more likely they are to stain and be difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Have them professionally cleaned once a year.
How do I coordinate with existing furniture?
That depends on how you feel about the existing furniture! If you like what you have, introduce the colours and patterns into your rug, so they complement each other. Otherwise, perhaps make the rug the feature, to take the attention away from the furnishings.
What do I look for when buying a rug?
You generally get what you pay for, so look for quality rugs made from New Zealand wools, and silks if your budget can afford it. Quality wools always retain their volume and colour well.
Any other expert advice or tips?
Before you go hunting for your rug, have a good look at the space you want it to go in, the size you require and what you are trying to achieve – do you want to complement the space, brighten the room, or introduce a feature rug? Also look at what colours will work so you have an idea of what to focus on.
